I've been wanting to try ToonBoom for a while now.
Is it much different to Flash?
Like, will it take getting used to?

I saw Adam animating with this a couple days ago. Looks complicated. I'll stick with Flash, thank you. :3

TonnBoom is more of a tween animation program, the timeline isn't as intuitive as flash and the animation is based more on rig movement. That's the biggest reason id stick with flash over ToonBoom, to me the only real thing it has over flash is that it's rig (bone tool) system is a lot better. More developed and less buggy compared to the one in flash, and that it's 3D is definitely a lot better than the flash's and it has it's own built in camera, whilst in flash you can only use the v-cam made by other people and isn't rotatable in a z axis.

Actually quite the contrary. Toon Boom Animate 2's frame by frame is much more robust than Flash's. Light table function allows layers below your drawing to be transparent like a real light table instead of Flash's outline system. The brush is less "blotchy" like Flash's, allowing you edit the minimum and maximum of the brush size when using pen sensitivity and does NOT change size when zoomed in and you can "protect' certain colors (let's say, black, for line art), so that when you are painting you don't accidentally color over line art.

I assure you ToonBoom is *far* from being a only a tween program. If anything I'd argue that's secondary.

I've worked with toon boom harmony and i'ts a very powerfull tool. It's drawing features are far better (can combo really well with vector magic) has a real rigg sistem (easier than 3d software) but i'ts been always far more expenisve than flash, that price looks awesome. But yea its a bit complciated for solo projects. But very necessary for any major 2d project. (its palette sistem is very usefull for traditional animation painting)

But flash keeps it so symple it's easy to stik with it, and far more easy try out coz TB demos have watermarks and resolution restrictions.

I've even used TB to redraw scanned drawings then export in SFV open it with flash to do small works.

If flash is the same price i would choose TB ( although no scripting tools )

From what I've heard, you can't do much with it any Flash badass couldn't do.

From the front page, it looks like it says 'september 3'.
I have toon boom studio 4.5, and I usually only use it for stuff that has more dialogue, because of the built-in lip syncing stuff which saves SO MUCH TIME.

Flipbook all the way

pay for software...

ARRRGGGH!! I knew I should've gotten Toon Boom Animate. It's so much better and more powerful! Unfortunately, I only have Toon Boom Studio which is the lesser version. Dang! By the way are you working with Toon Boom Animate or are you still in flash?

I plan to use Toon Boom Animate 2 for my Junior and Senior thesis :). Honestly on the surface, Flash can do anything Toon Boom can do in terms of drawing, but it's the ease and polish Animate offers which makes the project a smoother ride. Because I do not have too many bills to pay and my job pays decently I could afford to drop $300 for an animation program, but others may not be as lucky.

From your short in sonic volume six I guess your tired of people requesting you to draw other folks "original" ideas lol.

This isn't about the Toon Boom Thingy but can you make like another version or something of Nazo Unleashed with silver the hedgehog in it please.Lots of people want you to.Plllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaass sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeplease make one.

Hey man! Great job on SS6. I loved your animation. Keep up the great work!

BTW... Your Nazo Unleashed 3 (Edited Edition) is my all time favorite flash!!

But the Timeline is definitely not as intuitive. Unless it's been changed in the newer versions, i recall it being similar to After Effect's or Anime Studio's. Which is very tween based. Does it have static frames? And do the keyframes connect with it's previous automatically? Or is it like in flash where each keyframe is very separate unless you add a tween to it yourself?

I know what you are saying, but if anything, the frames in Toon Boom Animate 2 are handled more closely to traditional animation, it even comes with it's own X Sheet layout, if you prefer to work like that.

"Key Frames" actually only apply to tweens of some sort and I have not dabbled with that too much yet but it does seem to automatically connect key frames together but I am pretty sure there are ways that I have not discovered on how to overcome this. You DO have to specify though WHEN you want it to tween, so it is not constantly tweening unless you make it so.

But for traditional animation, you get layers and for each new drawing you make, it is not a "keyframe", just another drawing that, by default, it exposed for 1 frame. To make the frame be on the screen longer, you can't just play the timeline and make a new empty frame. This is different from flash, but this gives you more control with timing. You can also instantly makes loops by selecting the frames you want to loop, then how many times you want to loop, and it automatically loops within the timeline. I believe you can also do it Flash style with embedded symbols that are already looped, but having that control over a loop instead of having a isolated movie clip works great on things like walk cycles where you need to pinpoint the frame where the character must begin to stop walking.

Also in the timeline, when you go up a layer, you can have it so the ones below become semi transparent, which is GREAT when you are inking over the rough drawings.

Also: PARENTING. Which Flash still has not got down yet. You can put your mouth on one layer, parent it to the head/body layer, so if your character is moving and talking at the same angle, the mouth will stay connected.

Also, which version did you try out? Toon Boom "ANIMATE 2" is much better than "STUDIO"
